China had warned in a notice for Tuesday's World AIDS Day that homosexual transmission of the disease is increasing and called for health authorities nationwide to step up prevention work.
The statement issued by the health ministry came a day after President Hu Jintao called on the nation's people not to discriminate against those with HIV in comments widely broadcast by the nation's government-controlled media.
"Sexual contact continues to be the main channel of transmission with the speed of homosexual transmission clearly increasing," the health ministry said.
"This is a new situation that we need to pay attention to."

He imitated Brutus, made joke of him and called him an old dinosaur that has nothing left. He also bagged Sydney and Australia and drew some heat. Then Brutus with a promo on the big screen. Brutus came out with Jimmy Hart to an average pop. The match began with Brutus taunting Orlando.

It took them a few minutes time to get it on, and when they did Orlando braced the advantage. Brutus with a sleeper early, but Jordan slipped out of it smartly. The action spilled to the outside with Brutus slapping the sleeper on Jordan and being backed into the ring apron. Orlando rammed Brutus into the apron again. Back in the ring, a little bit of back and forth action, Brutus with a backdrop and a few rights. Orlando missed a knee drop and Brutus with the sleeper for the win. After the match Brutus cut a little bit of Jordans hair and the crowd enjoyed it.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a group of inherited disorders which includes weaken connective tissue which supports skin, bones, blood vessels and other organs.

People suffering from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or EDS have problems with their skin, joints, and blood vessel walls such as loose joints, fragile vessels, abnormal scar formation and would healing among others.

Prognosis of EDS depends on the type of the disorder. Symptoms vary person to person depending upon the individual. Some people have negligible symptoms while others are severely rstricted in their daily life, according to wikipedia.

Faulty genetics is responsible for all cases of EDS. For a child to inherit EDS, both parents need to carry the defective gene.

Inheritance depends on whether the gene creating the condition is dominant or recessive. If it is recessive, which is rarely the case with EDS, both parents need to carry the gene. If it is caused by a dominant gene, which happens in the majority of EDS cases, only one parents needs to have the defective gene. In some cases, though, neither parent has the defective gene. This is called a spontaneous mutation.

Diagnosis of this disorder may need a series of examinations including reviewing of a patient's family history. personal medical history, physical exam including testing of his joints fo laxity and his skin for texture and elasticity, biopsy and urine testing. The diagnosis of the disorder may involve dermatologists, rheumatologists, orthopedists and medical geneticists.

Treatments for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome include exercise, protection against injury to joints, fall prevention, eye exams, sun protection, surgery and vitamin C. People with EDS may need surgery to correct fracture and impaired joints.

EDS affects both women and men equally. One in every 5,000 to one in 10,000 people have one of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Though it's hard to tell exactly what is causing all the attention for rmolek, it seems due to a post on a message board, perhaps on Rivals.com, confirming that Stoops will be named the next Notre Dame head coach.
Rmolek is the user name of the poster, and appears to have a good reputation for being accurate.

Tiger is in injured condition after being involved in a single only car crash near his house in Florida early this morning.

The accident occurred at 2:20 a.m. near his home, and he was admitted to Health Central Hospital with facial lacerations. Woods struck a fire hydrant and then a tree on a neighbor's property. Police say alcohol was not the cause.

According to ESPN, the police report reads, "driver had just pulled out of the driveway at his residence ... as [vehicle] began to drive on Deacon Circle, [vehicle] struck a fire hydrant. The front of [vehicle] then struck a tree."

Canton judge recuses himself in legislator's accident case

In the hit-and-run case involving a St. Lawrence County legislator, the CANTON — Village Court Judge Michael C. Crowe recused himself.

Daniel J. Girard, 36, of 240 Route 131, Massena, charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident on Sept. 21,was prwesent in the court for arraignment but didn't offer a plea.

According to the Canton village police, he initially lied to an officer about being involved in the hit-and-run accident involving another legislator's car, but recanted when informed that people witnessed the accident.

According to an accident report, Mr. Girard drove his car about into a parking space at the County Courthouse on Court Street and hit a parked car owned by fellow Legislator Laura J. Perry, D-Hopkinton, of 28 Cassidy Road, Parishville. He allegedly got out to assess the damage and then drove his car out of the courthouse parking lot and across the street to the Public Safety Building lot, home of the county Sheriff's Department and state police.

Judge Crowe recused himself as he recently became county attorney. The district attorney's office also viewed to seek a special prosecutor for the case, court officials said.

Glick, died after undergoing open-heart-surgery on Thursday afternoon, according to WBZ-AM news and programming director Peter Casey.

Glick had worked for WBZ For 20 years,Glick worked for WBZ, building up a faithful following of "Glicknics," the radio station said on its website. Last he worked as a greeter at a Legal Sea Foods in Boca Raton.

Glick's career at WBZ reached its zenith when he was host for the station's early morning weekday shows, from midnight on. His name became a household word among night owl radio fans who were reached by the station's powerful signal in close to 40 states and eastern Canada. He also worked in a 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. spot and in the mid-afternoons before leaving the station in 1987.

Glick worked at WHDH-AM, hosting a 10 p.m. to 2 a.m, show until 1992. When he retired, he said he might carry on with his act as a stage hypnotist.

Glick told the Globe in 1991 that he loved the nighttime airwaves because he preferred the audience.

"I like people better at night," he said. "During the day, they're in a more business frame of mind. At night they might be the same callers, but they're more relaxed and less stressed. They might have their feet up, with a drink next to them while they're listening to the radio."

He said he liked to keep an upbeat pace and didn't get too many lovesick callers. "I shoot them off the air if they get too draggy," he said.

'American Idol': Top 36 contender for Top
The top 36 contenders for the big bang had been revealed.On previous night's American Idol, the remaining contestants sang one last time and 54 of them found out they had made the cut. But they only sort of did, as tonight, we'll learn which 36 actually made it through. The judges are making one last cut after rewatching the footage of all of them.

They are not going up the elevator and moving down a hall, The contestants will have to walk through this Hollywood mansion to find out whether they've made it.

First up: Anoop Desai, whose performances I've really enjoyed. He is in!

Von Smith says he is more prepared for them to say no rather than yes. He tells Ryan Seacrest, "This is why I'm alive." Overdramatic, much? Well, that's kind of his thing. He gets crazy-overanalytical in front of the judges, and they finally tell him he has made the cut.

Waitaminutewait, we have to go through two hours of people walking to the judges and getting the news? Come on!

Amateur horror film maker Cody Sheldon is the first person to deal with tonight's twist -- the sing-off. He gets to the judges, and they tell him he has to sing one last song right now. He sings "The Love Remains the Same." Meanwhile, Alex Wagner-Trugman is the other victim, and, of course, these two are friends, so it ups the drama quotient. Side note: Do you think it's distracting having the camera swinging around them during this moment? Alex sings "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." The two friends sit outside and wait briefly, then get called back in. And this dragging out is why this show is two hours tonight. Grrr! Cody gets cut, and Alex makes it through.

Adam Lambert had been accused of being too musical theater, and he's a little worried. But he is through to the finals. Not a shock.

Taylor Vaifanua was called one of the best vocalists in her initial audition, but had a hard time during Hollywood Week. Well, that's what Ryan's narration says, but the clips show her singing well, albeit forgetting her words. And she is in the Top 36.

So are Jasmine Murray, Casey Carlson, Arianna Afsar, Megan Corkery, Mishavonna Henson and Stevie Wright. That wasn't much screen time for the women!

Joanna Pacitti, who caused controversy since she has already had a record deal, apparently forgot her words during nearly every performance of Hollywood week. Even so, the judges decide she deserves another (another) break, so she is a finalist. Or I guess that is semifinalist.

T.K. Hash, Chris Chatman and Reggi Beasley, all of whom we are seeing for the first time, don't make the cut.

Kendall Beard is hoping for the best but very nervous. Though they didn't love her song choices, she makes it anyway.

Jenn Korbee auditioned with her husband, and they hoped to both make it to the show, but he was cut during the group round of Hollywood Week. She stands up and sings "I'm Not Ready to Make Nice." Kristen McNamara is the other half of this sing off, and she figures it out while she waits in the hall and freaks out. She sings a few bars of "I Will Always Love You" with lots of runs that seem very nervous. Kara DioGuardi tells Jenn that was the wrong song choice, and Paula tells Kristen she has an identity crisis and that her look doesn't make sense. Then, all together, talking over one another, they say that it's interesting because if you put them together, you would have one great contestant. Which basically means they are telling Jenn she can't sing and Kristen that she's not cute. Ouch. Anyway, Kristen is through and Jenn is out. Which is weird because I thought Kristen's song choice was odd and oddly delivered and that Jenn did a better job. And Simon says he totally disagrees with the decision.

Alexis Grace will be away from her daughter if she makes it through to the Top 36. She makes it, so I guesss she will find a way to deal.

Scott Macintyre makes it, too. Ryan doesn't try to high-five him this time.

Lil Rounds hopes to make it through to improve her family's situation. The judges drag it out, but she makes it. On her way out, Simon Cowell comments that she is fantastic, "a good, old-fashioned singer."

Felicia Barton, Ashley Hollister and Devon Baldwin all find out they didn't make it. And like with the guys above, it's the first screen time they've gotten.

Frankie Jordan and Jesse Langseth will be in a sing-off, but Jesse hasn't really been on the show much, so I'm guessing Frankie is making it. Frankie is uber-nervous and her performance is not great. (Simon says: "Well, that made it easier for us.") Then Jesse sings, and she sounds better, but Simon tells her it was a horrible song choice. Jesse makes it, but Frankie doesn't. Simon says, "Frankie, if it's any consolation, you wouldn't have won anyway." Then he tells Jesse that, "based on that, you won't either." Yikes. And so much for my predictions.

Shera Lawrence and Derik Lavers find out they aren't making it. They cry.

Allison Iraheta is 16 and worked really hard to make an impression during Hollywood week. And though we have barely seen her thus far, so she's not had a chance to make an impression on viewers, she is in the Top 36.

Danny Gokey is hoping he and his best friend make it through. Randy Jackson asks how he thinks he did, and he says that he thinks he did well under pressure. Simon and Kara ask if he thinks he can be relevant, and he says he thinks he is relevant. Randy welcomes him to Season 8.

Then it's Jamar Rogers' turn (that's the best friend in question). Kara tells him that she isn't sure the risks he took during Hollywood week paid off, but the look on her face totally says, "Psych! You made it!" Except that then she tells him he is not going on to the Top 36. The holding room is mute with shock. So is Danny.

Ricky Braddy, Matt Giraud, Marylander Ju'Not Joyner, Brent Keith and Jorge Nunez all learn that they have made the cut.

Stephen Fowler says he thinks he was doing an excellent job until the final day of Hollywood week, when he lost his lyrics and walked out. He tries to plead his case, but they tell him it's too late. Then they tell him he is in the Top 36. Didn't they say some time during Hollywood week that if you forgot your words, you were out?

Norman Gentle/Nick Mitchell kept trying to decide between his comedic persona or his real persona. He shows up at the judges' table as himself, but he tells them his dream is to perform as his character on the show. Turns out that is what they (not including Simon) want -- Norman is through. Really? Nick says it is unbelievable, and Simon says, yep, it is. I concur.

Jackie Tohn says she thought she did well during Hollywood week. Randy says it's been hard having to say goodbye to some people, but she makes it, and she jumps up and dances and takes her shoes off and sprints out of the room.

Tatiana del Toro is next. Please no. No, OK? Please. I cannot deal with her. She squeals when she comes in the room, and Simon tells her to be quiet and to try to not be annoying. She shows Paula the bracelet from her line that she bought, and Tatiana tells her how she really wanted the ring, but it was sold out and she cried. And Paula comes over and gives her the ring off her finger. Simon gives Paula crap for promoting her jewelry line "on live television." Oh, and Tatiana gets through. Bleh. Well, as they remind us in the clips, she can sing, she just shouldn't be allowed to get near the cameras otherwise. Ryan says they look forward to seeing what she brings to their live shows. Aha. It suddenly makes sense.

Jackie Midkiff and Nathaniel Marshall are best buds, and of course, are thus in a sing-off. Jackie hasn't gotten a ton of screen time, but Nathaniel has -- he was Mr. Drama throughout everything. Now we get his backstory -- he has lived with lots of members of his family because his mother is in prison because of a drug problem. As I am making fun of his outfit, Simon asks him, "What are you wearing?" Jackie sings, and Kara questions why he is in this position because he is good. Nathaniel sings, and then they make him leave and wait. Nathaniel sits by Jackie, crying about how he wants it so bad but doesn't want to take away Jackie's dream. Nathaniel makes the Top 36, but Jackie doesn't. Randy tells Jackie to come back next time. Actually, because of all the drama he created, I hadn't noticed before, but Nathaniel's voice isn't bad.

Probably no one will believe me, but during the first sing-off, I said to my husband that they were totally going to make the oil-rig worker and the welder face off. Guess what is happening after the break?

Jeanine Vailes, Kai Kalama, Anne Marie Boskovich and Kris Allen all learn they are in the Top 36.

Matt Breitzke and Michael Sarver will be facing off in a sing-off. Matt is the welder, and Michael is the oil-rig roughneck. They sing, and they wait. Simon says he likes both of them, but he's not sure either could win. Oh, twisty, they both get through. Awww. That's sweet, but I bet Danny and Jamar are sad.

Roberto Alomar's former girlfriend Ilya Dall discloses in a lawsuit that Alomar is suffering from full-blown AIDS.

Dall, 32 & Alomar stayed together for three years. Alomar the infielder played with seven teams including the Mets, Baltimore, Toronto and Cleveland for 17 seasons.

Dall has stated in the papers filed in state and federal court,that Alomar finally got tested in January 2006 while suffering from a cough, fatigue and shingles. "The test results of him being HIV-positive was given to him and the plaintiff on or about Feb.6, 2006," the $15 million negligence suit says.

Nine days later, the couple went to see a disease specialist who discovered a mass in the retired second baseman's chest, the court papers say.Alomar's skin had turned purple, he was foaming at the mouth and a spinal tap "showed he had full-blown AIDS," the suit says.

Charles Bach, Alomar's lawyer, called the lawsuit frivolous. He said his client is "healthy and would like to keep his health status private. We'll do our talking in court."

The award, originated in 1973, is the Hall's most prestigious honor outside of enshrinement. Many longtime basketball experts have bemoaned Kerr's exclusion from the Hall.

John G. “Red” Kerr was born on July 17, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. He is a retired American NBA basketball player who now works as a pre-game and half-time commentator for Chicago Bulls' home games. Playing career
Although Johnny Kerr’s first passion was soccer, an eight-inch growth spurt during his senior year at Tilden Technical High School compelled him to turn his attention to basketball. The 6' 9" center soon led his school’s basketball team to the 1950 Chicago Public League Championship. After high school, he attended the University of Illinois, where he scored 1,299 points during his three years with the school’s varsity team. In 1954, the Syracuse Nationals selected Johnny Kerr with the sixth overall pick of the NBA Draft. He would go on to become a three time All-Star (1956, 1959, 1963) with the Nationals, despite playing in the shadow of future Hall-of–Famer Dolph Schayes.

Now Rodriguez criticized Sports Illustrated and said Journalist Selena Roberts, one of its reporters who covered the story, stalked him. He also accused that last week Selena Roberts tried to break into his home while his two daughters were sleeping. KAWS … the painter,the designer, former graffiti artist, and the popular name in the art circuit.
Till now, after hiding himself for years,skipping galleries, the star is now disclosing his face, and his work, to whole world.
34 year old KAWS started with illegal public painting of graffiti while he was kid.

"He is just of his time. He connects with his generation, totally. And the younger ones as well. I mean, they just idolize him."

"It doesn't feel like somebody painted it," a guest at the showing said about one work. "It feels almost like a drawing blown up, you know what I mean? Yeah, it's perfect."

KAW told"I just started simply through graffiti and drawing on my skateboard and painting on walls and getting that small recognition".

His family call him as Brian Donnelly while he grew up in the shadow of Manhattan, across the river in Jersey City, where his faded tags can still be seen on the sides of buildings.

Donnelly used the name KAWS to stay anonymous. Just five years ago only he made his real name public.

"It's just a combination of letters I liked," he told Altschul. "And when your whole art's based on the lettering you choose, you kinda figure out what ones work together. I just liked the shapes of the k, a, w, s. It has no meaning."

KAWS became a street legend in the '90s by drawing over bus stop ads, establishing his signature mark … placing x's over character's eyes.

He then started designing products and vinyl figures, including a character called "companion," and painting cartoon characters from his childhood.

Altschul described a "nostalgic" from some of his work, which Donnelly connected to Smurfs.

"For me, that's one of the things, if I went to the dentist, I was allowed to buy a smurf afterwards."

Ten years later, thanks in part to a huge Internet fanbase, KAWS (who hasn't painted graffiti in a decade) has become a worldwide sensation.

Even some of music's biggest names have taken note. Hip-hop mogul Pharrell Williams was an early admirer.

"To our generation, we're gonna look at him, like, you know, he's the guy that made us pay attention to art," Williams said.

Williams has commissioned dozens of pieces for his Miami home.

"When you see KAWS, he is somethin'," he told Altschul. "His work is really truly like a stimulant. It connects with the inner child."

(Roc-A-Fella Records)Working out of his Brooklyn studio, KAWS has also created artwork for superstar rapper Kanye West's latest album, "808’s and Heartbreak" (left), and for billboards. He has also collaborated with some of the world's biggest brands, like Nike and Marc Jacobs.

He only releases a limited number of each product. "What is a fan to do if someone wants to buy one?" Altschul asked.

"You know, they come savvy really fast," he said, "and figure out how to buy stuff at retail."

But it's not always that easy. Last fall, thousands of fans lined the streets of Tokyo outside KAWS' shop in hopes of buying a "Star Wars" stormtrooper he designed with Lucasfilm. Most went home empty-handed.

Despite his increasing fame, KAWS says he happiest in the studio.

"It's really the only time where I could have clarity and think about everything that's going on and happening," Donnelly said. "There's sort of just a calmness of being there and working and being in the studio alone."

He's created dozens of new pieces, including bronze sculptures of his own head, for solo shows at galleries in New York, Miami and an upcoming exhibition that opens later this month in Los Angeles. They can sell for up to $100,000.

The shows give KAWS a chance to introduce himself to a new audience, while sending his diehard fans into a frenzy.

Surprised on his popularity KAWS "Yeah, I don't know what to make of it," he said. "It is shocking that [there are] that many people that are interested or follow the work."

Though fans see him as a phenomenon, KAWS has a different view:

"Right now I feel hungry," he said. "I feel like there's a lot of things I need to settle. There are things I need to do. There are places I need to get that I'm really far from."

Veteran actor James Whitmore after acting for more than 50yrs died of lung cancer at his home in Malibu.

Whitmore was excellent either in stage or on screen. His awards include both a Tony and Emmy Award as well as an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for his second movie, the hit 1949 World War II drama, Battleground.

In 2000, Whitmore won an Emmy Award as outstanding guest actor in a drama series for The Practice, and he received a 2003 Emmy nomination in the same category for Mister Sterling.

James Whitmore was 87.
He had been diagnosed with lung cancer a week before Thanksgiving, said his son Steve Whitmore, a Los Angeles County sheriff's official. Whitmore had success on Broadway before coming to Hollywood in 1949. Whitmore was nominated for the best actor Oscar for his depiction of Harry Truman in 1975's "Give 'em Hell, Harry!" and also was noted for his one-man shows on the lives of Will Rogers and Theodore Roosevelt. His latest credit was for a 2007 episode of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

Clement Hurd is dead

Son of a New York mortgage banker Clement G. Hurd was born on January 12, 1908 & died on February 5, 1988. He was an American illustrator of children's books.Clement Hurd did tons of books with author Margaret Wise Brown including Goodnight Moon (1947) and The Runaway Bunny (1942).
He is also known for illustrations of various books written by his wife Edith (a friend of Brown's) as well as a children's book written by Gertrude Stein, The World Is Round (1938).

The son of a New York mortgage banker, Hurd was educated at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, studied architecture at Yale University and painting with Fernand Léger in Paris. On seeing two of his paintings, Brown asked him if he would consider illustrating children's books.

His son Thacher Hurd is also a children's book author and illustrator, and referred in an interview to the "wonderful aura of creativity" surrounding his father and the Vermont farm that was their home.

"I asked James Cagney one time to tell me the best thing you can about acting. He said never to get caught at it. That's kind of how I'd sum up Jim Whitmore."

James Arness, who appeared with Whitmore in the movies "Battleground" and "Them!," said Whitmore was "an actor's actor," adding that "it was always a treat to work with him."

Arness also remembered the "great intensity" Whitmore could bring to a role.

"When we wanted to get an actor to play a character who had that quality, Jimmy was the guy you'd think of," said Arness, who starred in "Gunsmoke," a TV series that Whitmore appeared on a number of times.

A stocky World War II Marine Corps veteran who bore a resemblance to actor Spencer Tracy and shared Tracy's down-to-earth quality, Whitmore earned early acclaim as an actor.

In 1948, he won a Tony Award for outstanding performance by a newcomer in the role of an amusingly cynical Army Air Forces sergeant in the Broadway production of "Command Decision."

Whitmore's Broadway success brought him to Hollywood, where he received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor in his second movie, the hit 1949 World War II drama "Battleground," in which he played a tobacco-chewing, battle-weary Army sergeant.

Supporting roles and occasional leads in some 50 movies followed over the next 50-plus years, including "The Asphalt Jungle," "Them!," "Kiss Me Kate," "Battle Cry," "Oklahoma!," "Planet of the Apes," "Tora! Tora! Tora!," "The Serpent's Egg," "Nuts," "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Majestic."

Ahead of the expected announcement at a news conference in London on Monday, Odyssey Marine Exploration's CEO Greg Stemm said the firm was negotiating with Britain over collaborating on the project.
"This is a big one, just because of the history," Mr Stemm was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
"Very rarely do you solve an age-old mystery like this."
Mr Stemm declined to reveal the exact location of the warship's remains.
"We found this more than 50 miles (80km) from where anybody would have thought it went down," he said.

It sank with more than 1,100 seamen aboard, including Admiral Sir John Balchen, in a fierce storm off the Channel Islands.
The ship's exact location has since remained a mystery, despite numerous attempts by salvagers to find it.
The vessel had 100 brass cannons and reportedly some 100,000 gold coins on board.
In 2007, Odyssey said it had salvaged 17 tonnes of gold and silver coins, worth $500m (£343m), from a shipwreck in the North Atlantic.
The Spanish government later sued the company, claiming the the sunken ship was a famous 19th-Century Spanish galleon.

PHILADELPHIA — Although some critics deride his art as drab and kitschy, Andrew Wyeth's melancholy paintings were praised by others as profound reflections of 20th Century alienation and existentialism.
Wyeth, who focused on the people and landscapes of Pennsylvania's Brandywine Valley and coastal Maine in works such as "Christina's World," died in his sleep at his Philadelphia-area home early Friday. He was 91.
The death of Wyeth _ the most famous member of the three-generation family art dynasty _ will likely rekindle the debate over his contribution to American art.
"The squabbling is kind of art-world politics over who owns modernism," said curator Kathleen Foster of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, who helped assemble the last major retrospective of his work at the museum in 2006.
Wyeth's pictures express for many the alienation of 20th century life and art, she said. Yet critics in the 1950s assailed him as a provincial reactionary next to New York abstract painters Jackson Pollock and William de Kooning.
"As we get farther from his work, we're going to recognize that he's just a different voice of modernism," Foster said. "This kind of quarreling over his status is going to fade, and he will be recognized as a great, great American artist."
Wyeth died at his home in suburban Chadds Ford, Pa., after a brief illness, according to Jim Duff, director of the Brandywine River Museum.
The son of famed painter and book illustrator N.C. Wyeth and the father of painter Jamie Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth gained wealth, acclaim and tremendous popularity during his lengthy art career.

Still, some critics viewed him as a facile realist, not an artist but merely an illustrator.
"One critic has called Wyeth the greatest living kitschmeister, while others have compared him to Edward Hopper or the Abstract Expressionists," said Milton Esterow, the editor and publisher of Artnews, which lavishly praised Wyeth's work in the 1950s but has since stayed on the sidelines. "I think the jury is still out."
The public voiced no such complaints, embracing his work over half a century and turning out in record numbers for the 2006 exhibit in Philadelphia.
The Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, a converted 19th-century grist mill, includes hundreds of works by three generations of Wyeths.
"He was a man who had a deep understanding of the human condition," Duff said. "The world is a beautiful place but the world holds many threats."
It was in Maine that Wyeth found the subject for "Christina's World," his best-known painting. And it was in Pennsylvania that he met Helga Testorf, a neighbor in his native Chadds Ford who became the subject of intimate portraits that brought him millions of dollars and a wave of public attention in 1986.
The "Helga" paintings, many of them full-figure nudes, came with a whiff of scandal: Wyeth said he had not even told his wife, Betsy, about the more than 200 paintings and sketches until he had completed them in 1985.
Wyeth's world was as limited in scale, and as rich in associations, as "Christina's World," which shows a disabled woman looking up a grassy rise toward her farm home, her face tantalizingly unseen.
"Really, I think one's art goes only as far and as deep as your love goes," Wyeth said in a Life magazine interview in 1965.
Wyeth remained active in recent years and President George W. Bush presented him with a National Medal of the Arts in 2007.
"Laura and I deeply mourn the death of American painter, Andrew Wyeth," President Bush said in a statement.
His granddaughter, Victoria Wyeth, told The Associated Press in 2008 that he no longer gave interviews. "He says, 'Vic, everything I have to say is on the walls,'" she said.
Wyeth was born July 12, 1917, in Chadds Ford, the youngest of N.C. Wyeth's five children. One of his sisters, Henriette, who died in 1997, also became an artist of some note, and one of his two sons, Jamie, became a noted painter in his own right. His other son, Nicholas, became an art dealer.
In 1987-88, a traveling exhibit of works by N.C., Andrew and Jamie was seen by thousands in cities around the world.
N.C. Wyeth, the only art teacher Wyeth ever had, didn't always agree with his son's taste.
In a 1986 interview with the AP, Wyeth recalled one of the last paintings he showed to his father, who died in 1945. It was a picture of a young friend walking across a barren field.
"He said, `Andy, that has a nice feel of a crisp fall morning in New England.' He said, `You've got to do something to make this thing appeal _ if you put a dog in it, or maybe have a gun in his hand,'" Wyeth recalled.
"Invariably my father talked about my lack of color."
The low-key colors that made up his palette _ which art critic Dave Hickey described as mere "mud and baby poop" _ stem partly from his frequent use of tempera, a technique he began using in 1942. Unlike the oil paint used by most artists today, tempera produces a matte effect.
Wyeth had his first success at age 20, with an exhibition of Maine landscapes at a gallery in New York. Two years later he met his future wife, Betsy James.
Betsy Wyeth was a strong influence on her husband's career, serving as his business agent, keeping the world at bay and guiding his career choices.
It was Betsy who introduced Wyeth to Christina Olson. Wyeth befriended the disabled old woman and her brother, and practically moved in with them for a series of studies of the house, its environs and its occupants.
The acme of that series was "Christina's World," painted in 1948. It was Olson's house, but the figure was Betsy Wyeth.

Andrew Wyeth, best-loved painter of wistfulness, rural bleakness, menace, Puritanical solitude and an America lost to 20th-century dry rot, died yesterday morning in his sleep at the Wyeth family estate in Chadds Ford, Pa., between Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del. He was 91. He died in just the sort of weather he loved, the empty cold and the sharp sunlight of the dead of winter.
"America's best-known and best-loved artist," said a catalogue for a 1996 show at the Baltimore Museum of Art, before it elevated him still higher: "America's artist."
At a White House dinner in 1970, Richard Nixon toasted Wyeth as an artist who "caught the heart of America." Critic Jay Jacobs once called him "the spiritual leader of Middle America."
As such, he took a beating from critics who attacked him as morbid, mawkish and a "Martha Stewart existentialist." He made it easy for them with his morbid coyness, and his attempts to claim credentials as the sort of abstractionist they admired.
Coy: as in a painting called "Brown Swiss," which showed an off-white farmhouse reflected in a pond and surrounded by brown pasture with no cows in it whatsoever. He liked to say that his most famous painting, "Christina's World," might have been better without Christina in it, a crippled, withered woman in a pink housedress dragging herself up a parched hill toward a weather-beaten Maine farmhouse. It wouldn't have.
Throughout his career, Wyeth and modernists tried and failed to reconcile. The Museum of Modern Art bought "Christina's World" in 1949, but Wyeth continued to be scorned by those who eschewed emotions associated with beauty, and found virtue instead in progress, originality, abstraction, shock, pop culture and politics.

"I honestly consider myself an abstractionist," Wyeth said in 1965. He said his biggest failing was too much "subject" in his work. But it was his realism and his subject matter that won him the love of millions of fans.
He was born in Chadds Ford. His father was N.C. Wyeth, who painted wildly vital illustrations for books such as "Treasure Island" and "The Last of the Mohicans." N.C. found beauty in melancholy, too: "Anything that I appreciate keenly and profoundly is always sad to the point of being tragic . . . so sad because it is all so beautiful, so hopeless."
Both Andrew and his father may have seemed to carry the banner for foes of modernism, but they both -- Andrew, in particular -- had the 20th-century knack for success through making unhappiness beautiful, in the manner of Edward Hopper, Mark Rothko, Ernest Hemingway or Miles Davis. Wyeth's son Jamie has followed the family tradition.
Andrew was a sickly child, and was schooled at home. Summers, the family went to Cushing, Maine, in a yearly migration that has continued for almost a century.
His father's historical props and costumes provided material for fantasies and family pageants. Wyeth stayed away from his father's subject matter, however, and from a career in illustration. Early watercolors of the Maine coast made up his first show, at the William Macbeth Gallery in New York, when Wyeth was 20. Soon he was experimenting with egg tempera, a medium used in medieval painting. Wyeth liked it, he said, because "it has a cocoonlike feeling of dry lostness -- almost a lonely feeling."

Mass. teacher accused of having sex with teen

An elementary school teacher accused of having sex with a teenage boy pleaded not guilty to rape charges Friday.
Christine A. McCallum, 29, of Rockland, is accused of having multiple sexual encounters with the boy that began when he was 13 years old. The alleged incidents occurred in Abington and Rockland.
McCallum was released on $10,000 bond after she pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape at Brockton District Court for the incidents in Abington. She also pleaded not guilty later Friday in Hingham District Court on four additional counts for the alleged rapes in Rockland.
The married fifth-grade teacher has been fired from her job at Woodsdale Elementary School in Abington, Superintendent Peter G. Schafer said Friday.
"We are aware and are deeply concerned about the disturbing allegations against her, and we will be fully cooperating with the authorities," Schafer said in a statement.
Rockland police Chief John Llewellyn said his officers and Abington police arrested McCallum at her home Thursday night.
Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz said McCallum was working as a teacher's aide and tutoring the boy's younger brother when the relationship began. Cruz said the father of the boy, now 16, went to authorities recently after he found some correspondence between his son and McCallum.
"The allegations are very disturbing, when you are alleging that a grown woman in a position of trust ... is allegedly having a sexual relationship with a child," Cruz said.
In court, Assistant District Attorney Michael Scott said McCallum had become like a surrogate mother to the boy, who lives in Abington and was being raised by a single father. He said the relationship progressed to kissing and sex after McCallum plied the boy with alcohol.
McCallum's attorney, Frederick McDermott, said there was no evidence his client ever had sex with the teen. He said she acted as the boy's surrogate mother, but that relationship ended in July 2007 after she caught the boy stealing liquor from her home.
McCallum was ordered to stay away from the boy, his family, and all children under 16. She also must wear a tracking device and surrender her passport.

When she was just ten years old, Brittney Bergeron survived a brutal crime that left her paralyzed. Last night on 20/20 she shared her horrifying story. Read more and see pictures here.

Brittney Bergeron father & mother struggled with drugs, alcohol and gambling. Both had done time for various offenses and that left Britney and her 3-year-old sister Kristyanna Cowan left to fend for themselves often.
Her mother and new boyfriend moved the girls to a small gambling town outside of Vegas. And while the couple gambled up to $18,000 monthly and got high on methamphetamines, Brittney cared for her little sister.“I fed her. I made sure she got to bed. I made sure she had clean clothes.”
Then January 2003, Brittney and Kristyanna were at house a lone while the adults were gambling. Just after 1 a.m. 19-year-old Beau Maestas and his 16-year-old sister Monique came to the trailer looking for Brittney’s mother and boyfriend. They were upset because they had been sold $125 of methamphetamines, but claim that it was actually salt.
“I went to the lady and said, ‘Look, this is salt. I’d like my money back.’” he told police. “And I was like, ‘You want this to get ugly?’”
The went to the casino to confront Brittney’s mother and boyfriend, but the teenagers were asked to leave the casino because they were underage. Enraged, they planned their revenge.
Beau and Monique went to the trailer where Brittney and her sister were sleeping and knocked on the door, telling Brittney that her mother was hurt at the casino and needed help. Brittney opened the door and went to get her shoes, but the siblings grabbed her and began punching her. She fought for her life, and desperately tried to protect her sister. Beau stabbed 32-pound Kristyanna with a large kitchen knife, while Monique stabbed Brittney 27 times.
Tamara Bergeron returned to the trailer and began holding towels over her lesions to stop the bleeding. A neighbor called casino security, which then called the police.
sisters were flown to the Trauma Center at University Medical Center in Las Vegas and rushed into surgery. Kristyanna had been stabbed, and the knife had pierced her skull and brain. Kristyanna never made it out alive. Meantime, Brittney was in the operating room for two hours. Upon waking up, she learned that one of the knife wounds had severed her spinal cord and she could never walk again.
But Brittney has kept a positive out look about her prognosis.
“A lot of people have come up to me and say, you know, do you miss walking? And I say, you know, actually, I don’t. Overall, I think I like being in a wheelchair better because I have a better life. Before I didn’t have such a great life.”
Brittney now lives with one of Nevada’s award-winning foster care parents, Judy and Bill Himel, who take care of her and meet all her medical needs, and last summer they adopted her. Brittney has undergone hundreds of hours of counseling and physical therapy, and has adjusted to life as a paraplegic.
